Joint mortar The composition of the joint mortar should lie between the limits 1c : ½ lime : 4s and 1c : 1l : 5s. Auxiliary material The usual bricklaying tools, augmented with a cutting device for cutting the bricks to size if necessary. With building blocks the usual bricklaying tools are supplemented with a mortar applicator to form an even bed joint, as well as a clamping device for easy positioning of the blocks.
Construction The building brick must be sufficiently moist for laying (5-8 percent by weight). To this end the material to be used in the construction should usually be moistened on the day prior to laying depending on the weather conditions. If there is severe wind or light frost the newly constructed walls should be shored up. The building block can be laid both manually and using a crane. Building blocks for backing brickwork are placed alongside each other dry at the vertical joints, after which the trough mortises near the vertical joints are filled when laying the overlying bed joint. By using a mortar applicator the trough mortises in the blocks are filled and the bed joints are laid to the correct thickness.
