Installation: Ceilings

Fermacell can be used for ceiling and sloping roof applications. Where Fermacell is used in these cases it provides an ideal base for subsequent installations of partitions because of its excellent screw holding capabilities. When installing a ceiling using Fermacell, the same considerations apply as for walls, except that the fixing centres and the spacings of the supporting members are altered in accordance with the table below. It is also important to take into account the additional weight of Fermacell when compared to plasterboard. For this reason it is recommended that help is sought when installing Fermacell in ceiling applications. The ability of Fermacell to be fixed to timber substructures using pneumatically applied nails or staples is a particular benefit in these cases. The table below gives full details of the load-bearing members of the supporting structure for ceilings. Where these details are not used, the deflection of the supporting construction must not exceed 1/500 of the effective span.

Step 3: Install joists

Step 3: Install joists

Fit the joists that will support the new independent ceiling into the joist hangers.
Step 4: Install Rockwool

Step 4: Install Rockwool

Cut the Rockwool insulation so that it fits snugly between the joists and push into place.
Step 5: Install Fermacell Tapered Edge board

Step 5: Install Fermacell Tapered Edge board

Screw the board to the joists through the tapered edge of the board.
Step 6: Install noggins

Step 6: Install noggins

On the sides of the board not fully supported by the joists, join them to the next board by fixing both boards to a noggin or Fermacell offcut.
Step 7: Finish joints

Step 7: Finish joints

Tape and finish the joints in the same way as you would with normal plasterboard.
Step 8: Install second layer of Fermacell

Step 8: Install second layer of Fermacell

Fix a second layer of Fermacell Tapered Edge board, staggering the joints and screwing through the tapered edges of the second layer into the first layer of board. Tape and finish the joints in the same way as you would with normal plasterboard.
